Antoine's Bakery
317 Watertown Street, Nonantum
Old-fashioned bakery with cakes, cinnamon bread, and cookies.
A little bit of a ride, but worth the trip.

I have had good luck with Gerardo's on Rte 9 East right after the intersection of 135. They have very good cannolis (though not as good as Modern in the North End, but then again, who does?), excellent cakes, good butter cookies (although watch out if you don't like anise), their biscotti are delish and I love that they have mini versions of most everything.
I don't find them to be on the same level as Clear Flour, Japonaise, Modern, Maria's, Bova or Flour, but they are a nice alternative when you don't feel like the drive or the traffic. I would avoid Lakota (in Arlington) at all costs; I have been there three times (to be fair) and all three times they have SORELY disappointed. I know I am picky but the people with whom I went pronounced their stuff as "gross" and "stale".

The Icing On the Cake in Newton has great cakes. They decorate in ways you would never imagine. I got my wedding cake from them and I also get my children's themed birthday cakes there also. Good Luck!

Hi There - In need of a special birthday cake, I drove to the shops on Boston Post Road in Marlborough where the Wayside Country store is looking for Esler's bakery. Well, Esler's is no longer there but Madrid European Bakery & Patisserie is in its space. The cakes and pastries are so beautiful and delicious!! The owner gave me a taste of the San Marcos, their signature cake (comes in vanilla or chocolate). I chose that for the birthday cake (one in each flavor). I also tried the chocolate roulade and the croissant (made only on weekends or by special order). There goes the diet! Anyway, I highly recommend this bakery for unique, flavorful and dramatic desserts, for any special occasion (or "just because").
They also serve coffee and have alot of different homemade cookies that would make a nice gift.

- A wonderful family-owned local bakery is Madrid Bakery on route 20 east, just west of Framingham. In addition to delicious tortes, cakes, cookies, and cannoli, they also have some spectacular gluten-free options--a flourless chocolate torte, an almond cake and a hazelnut cake.

I have found the Madrid Bakery, on Rte 20 near the Marlborough/Sudbury line (same shopping area with the country store and Stephan Anthony's restaurant), to be superb. If you are not sure which pastries to try, you can get smaller versions to sample. Great brioche as well. Plus, it has the added benefit of being next to a great candy store!

Nashoba Brook Bakery
We like Nashoba Brook Bakery in West Concord. You can see most of their selection on their website. It isn't really close, but it's a beautiful drive and there are plenty of wonderful things to do in the Concord area.

They have cheese rolls in the morning that are just to die for. They're sort of a cross between a really high quality roll and a cheese popover. Two will make you want a third and three is too many.

Padaria is good. And their prices are better for some things, than even the grocery stores are around here, at times. And their coffee is really good STRONG coffee.
Many of the people behind counter (the last time I was in) did not speak English, really at all, but someone there can help you, and they were as accommodating as they could be. They were nice, although is was bit ackward, I think, mostly because the clientelle seemed surprised that we came in to shop. Their pastries (a lot of brazilian pastries have cheese in them) were excellent. They also had many other types of products to sell.

I LOVE CAKE!
and My favorite cake of all time is referred to as the "Strawberry Cake" and it's made at Quebrada at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 16 in Wellesley. It is obscenely expensive, but just thinking about it makes my mouth water and life is just too short to eat gross cake :). This cake is a sumptuous white cake with fresh strawberry and vanilla custard filling and a heavy whipped cream frosting - decorated with fresh flowers - very elegant. I think it's perfect for a special birthday. Or a blue mood. Or a Tuesday.

I'm a Huge fan of Quebrada Baking Co, Rte 9 Wellesley. Their pecan rolls are addictive, breads are fantastic, croissants are like what you would get in France. My favorite is a fruit tart they make; a flat, open tart with light custard and lots of colorful, tasty fruit on top. I've also had carrot cake and chocolate cake from them, and so far, nothing has been less than excellent. They also have a location in Arlington on Mass Ave next to the Capitol Theater.

Sudbury Farms/Roche Bros.
I love the cakes at Sudbury Farms / Roche Bros. They have the "typical" birthday cake with icing flowers but they also have these really delicious European cakes and tortes. They also make great bread (garlic & cheese is my favorite) and will slice it as thick or thin as you want.
It's a shame there aren't any really good bakeries in Framingham. Maybe someone will read these messages and open one. We can only hope.

Whole Foods
If it's a smaller party (and no kids), I agree that the cakes at Whole Foods are outstanding. They are a bit on the pricier side, but they are worth it for the quality (I say no kids because these are cakes geared more toward adult tastes).
Also, they're very rich. I had one cake for six adults at Easter this year and about half was left over! That's how filling they are.
